Co-Working Spaces: Do’s and Don’ts

Coworking spaces are a great place to ensure productivity and engage with other people who can also motivate and inspire you. But in order to maintain a pleasant experience in this type of work environment, there are a few ground rules that you should keep in mind.

Connecticut Business Centers, a premier coworking and office space provider,  lists some do’s and don’ts in coworking spaces.

Do’s

Keep Your Spot Clean

Whether you have an office suite or you’re sitting at a shared table, make sure to keep your spot clean and tidy. It would be great to always have wipes with you so that you can clean up spills immediately and disinfect your space. Don’t forget to throw away your trash as well. Having water or coffee by your side is fine, but avoid eating lunches in your space too. The smell of food or the sound of eating can distract the people near you.

Engage With the Coworking Community

Coworking spaces are communities where you can meet other like-minded professionals from various backgrounds and industries. You don’t necessarily have to speak to your fellow members all the time, but don’t hesitate to introduce yourself in the break room, in an elevator or other appropriate areas. Be mindful of how you engage with them. Don’t keep them for too long and avoid distracting them while they’re working. Never give a sales pitch to other members.

Don’ts

Don’t Be Loud

Much like in a traditional office space, keep your voice down whenever you need to speak. If you need to brainstorm or have a long discussion with a colleague, move to a private meeting room or office. If you need to take personal calls, do it in common areas. Or if you have a business call, you can use a private meeting room or the phone booth in the coworking space. If you like listening to music while working or you need to watch a video for work, use headphones.

Don’t Tinker With the Thermostat

The ideal temperature is different for every person. If you feel too hot or too cold, let your community manager know and leave it to them to decide whether to change the temperature or not. The thermostat in your coworking space is set to a specific number for a reason, so you can’t take the matter into your own hands and tinker with it. If you find yourself constantly feeling cold or hot, it would be best to choose more suitable pieces of clothing.
