Office Space

Characteristics of an Age-Neutral Workspace

More workplaces are becoming multigenerational workplaces. HR departments and executive team leaders should be aware that different age groups seek different features or characteristics in an office space. In this blog, Connecticut Business Centers shares some of these

Baby Boomers

There are three generations you should expect to see in the workplace: Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. Baby Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964; which would make the oldest Baby Boomer would be 73 this year. Baby Boomers are named as such because of the postwar population boom.

Being raised in this period made Baby Boomers a hardworking demographic. They would rather not engage in activities that waste their time. Baby Boomers also prefer face-to-face interactions, but can be distracted by lively environments, so team meetings are preferable over video conferencing as a primary means of communication.

Generation X

Gen Xers were born between 1965 to 1978. As the generation raised by Baby Boomers, this generation is instilled with the same work ethic as their elders. Growing up in the pre-internet period makes it easier for them to unplug when not at work and allows them to appreciate the value of face-to-face meetings like their elders do. Gen Xers prefer an office space that has a good balance between practical and aesthetic office equipment as well as parking spots for bicycles instead of cars.

Millennials

The youngest members of the workforce are referred to as Millennials, born in the early 1980s and 1990s. This generation grew up with technology and can easily adapt to new products as they come out. In addition to being up-to-date on office technologies, Millennials prefer workplaces that incorporate features such as living walls, paperless offices and water features. Using videoconferencing technologies are as ubiquitous for them as personal interactions. Having Millennials in an age-neutral team can challenge norms and traditional solutions, including the notion of what an office space should be.
